Because making lists is more fun than doing my work, and it’s New Year’s Eve, so fun should presumably win out.
BEST (ADULT) BOOK THAT NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE HAVE NOTICED IS BREATHTAKINGLY GOOD: Arcadia, by Lauren Groff
(COINCIDENTALLY) BEST BROADWAY SHOW I’VE SEEN IN MANY YEARS: Arcadia, by Tom Stoppard
BEST BOOK I VOW TO FINISH EVERY YEAR BUT STILL HAVEN’T MANAGED: Infinite Jest, by David Foster Wallace
(RELATED) BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT FOR WHICH I HAVE NO ONE TO BLAME BUT MYSELF: Every Love Story is a Ghost Story, by DT Max (disappointing because I somehow managed to forget that a book about David Foster Wallace wouldn’t actually be as satisfying as reading a book by David Foster Wallace)
BEST YA BOOK WRITTEN BY SOMEONE I DON’T KNOW AND THUS AM NOT BIASED IN FAVOR OF: Tie between Where Things Come Back by John Corey Whaley and A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness (and yes, I know neither came out this year and the latter isn’t technically YA, but it made me cry, which is good enough for me, and also I haven’t read Code Name Verity yet, so obviously I’m a little slow) Oh, and also Scowler, by Daniel Kraus, but you can’t read it til 2013
BEST YA BOOKS WRITTEN BY PEOPLE I DO KNOW BUT YOU SHOULD STILL TRUST ME WHEN I SAY THEY’RE AMAZING: See You at Harry’s, by Jo Knowles; The Diviners, by Libba Bray; The Madness Underneath, by Maureen Johnson; Unspoken, by Sarah Rees Brennan; Every Day, by David Levitahn; Black Heart, by Holly Black (and also by her, next year, the beautiful Doll Bones and the unfathomably good Coldtown, and have I mentioned how bitterly jealous I am of Holly Black and her stupidly good books?); Clockwork Princess, by Cassandra Clare (that’s right, I have read it, and IT IS GOOD)
BEST TITLE OF A BOOK I HAVEN’T YET READ BUT CLEARLY SHOULD: Mister Death’s Blue-Eyed Girls, by Mary Downing Hahn
BEST AIRPLANE READ I DID NOT ACTUALLY READ ON AN AIRPLANE BUT LOVED ANYWAY, BECAUSE IT IS AWESOME: Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn
BEST WEIRD VACATION: Celebration Cruise Lines Caribbean Cruise with Maureen Johnson (WEIRDEST BOOK TO READ ON SAID WEIRD VACATION: Zone One, by Colson Whitehead)
BEST VINDICATION: I told you Mandy Patinkin was awesome.
BEST BAD TV: With Make It Or Break It gone forever (but you’ll always be in my heart!) Degrassi: The Next Generation has a clear path to the gold.
BEST BAD MOVIE: Oh, come on, you’ve all seen Breaking Dawn Part 2, right? RIGHT? (RELATED, BEST GOOD MOVIE OF THE ONES THAT POP INTO MY HEAD BECAUSE I NEVER ACTUALLY REMEMBER ANY MOVIES: Looper)
BEST SERIES FINALE: Gossip Girl, because those of us who watched it to the bitter end got everything we could ever have wanted. GG, you know I love you. (Runner up: Weeds, which as per usual, straddled the line between amazing and grotesque.)
BEST SURPRISE (ALSO FILE UNDER: FINE, I ADMIT IT, I WAS WRONG, YOU WERE RIGHT): My Nook. RUNNER UP:
Vampire Aiden Turner
BEST VIEW: Tie between
BEST RESOLUTION FOR 2013: Undecided, but open to suggestions
BEST WISH FOR 2013: Secret. Sorry! (But, hint: related to my 2013 book, details for which are also secret, but can be scrounged up by savvy Googlers and will be forthcoming soon..ish.)
